Personality:
Nagito Komaeda comes across as a happy, simple person. He tries to keep others thinking optimistically and even seems insecure at times. Nagito thinks over situations diligently and tries to help others see the bigger picture. He can get a bit carried away, though, and even step over the line with an odd thought or two (all of this is illustrated well in the first chapter of DR2, as well as the Despair Arc of DR3). However, this is mostly a mask to cover Nagito's true nature.

Rather than Nagito simply being an evil person under the surface, Nagito's personality traits are warped to an astronomical degree. His optimistic pining is recolored in the shades of trying to achieve the greatest 'hope' for everyone (though the examples are numerous, a good one lies in Trial 1 as Nagito reveals his real thoughts to the others). That pursuit of hope infects and colors his motivations for almost everything. His insecurity reveals to be a total lack of self-worth or respect (Nagito consistently calls himself garbage and propositions the others to kill him so that his death can be in service of their hopes). Nagito views the world as a much colder and simple place where talent is ultimate and normal people cling to the coattails of talent like vermin (seen clearly in Nagito's behavior shift towards Hajime in chapter 4 and his attitude towards Komaru in Despair Girls).

Many of Nagito's beliefs stemmed from the problem he'd been tackling with ever since he can remember: his luck. Nagito's luck has trapped him in a self-perceived cycle of good and bad luck (see Nagito's free time conversations with Hajime) where good things are immediately followed by bad things and vice versa. As he grew up, he started to lean into the cycle where he'd aim to do something bad so that good could follow, even seeing the same in hope and despair. However, Nagito's luck and the things that it led to have deteriorated his own sense of self-worth to a drastic degree. His luck got his parents killed, got him kidnapped by a serial killer, involved in a plane crash, and has him living with a serious medical condition. As such, Nagito truly believes that he isn't worth anything more than being a stepping stone for someone of 'real value' to use.

However, Nagito isn't just some fanatical kid begging for death. Nagito can often be calculating to a scary degree. Because of his innate fascination with talent and the balance of hope and despair, Nagito's spent a long time watching people and learning how to read them. Often times Nagito will be the first to come up with a solution to a problem or to observe unusual shifts in other people (see Nagito's attitude in most trials). Even more than this, Nagito's predicted the actions of others through simply knowing them for a handful of days (see Trial 5 for best example). Nagito consistently comes up with elaborate plans in order to see his goals through and only ever comes up short through sheer happenstance (see Trial 1 with his failed knife prep, Trial 5 with Hajime's deduction, and Despair Arc with mixing up bottles through bumping into someone).

There is an inescapable sadness about Nagito, though. Nagito's been without positive or consistent relationships all his life. Deep down, Nagito wants to be loved by someone and appreciated, though he doesn't feel worthy of it (see the final free time with Nagito). He has trouble connecting with others and only ever feels like he really connected with one person, Hajime. Even that leaves Nagito conflicted, due to Hajime's status. Still, Nagito strives towards that acceptance and believes that it may actually be out there, even if his main goal is ever focused on hope (see the end of the 2.5 OVA).
